  • The tape spins down and stops — a transport / performance effect, not a defect or saturation pedal
  • STOP: hold to spin down to a halt, release to spin back up (an automatable param in the plugin)
  • TIME: spin-down/up inertia, 50 ms hard brake → 4 s slow coast (the exponential curve IS the character)
  • SPEED: resting varispeed 0.5× sludge → 2× chipmunk; at exactly 1.0× SPOOL is a pure tape-stop
  • Variable-speed read head on vmtape’s vm_transport (4th-order Lagrange — alias-clean pitch sweeps); pitch + tempo drop together, then fade to silence at the halt
  • Transport effect: the STOP gesture always returns to 1× glitch-free; a sustained extreme SPEED drifts on the finite buffer and resyncs (not a real-time time-stretch)
